Undergraduate Entry Requirements
- Students are required to hold their Intermediate/Higher Secondary Certificate with good results with first-division/class standing and a minimum average grade of 70%.
- A language other than English and Mathematics must be taken as a subject up to Grade X.
- Where there is a specific subject requirement for a specific programme (e.g. Maths, Physics, French, etc.), a minimum grade of 70% in that subject at Grade XII is required.
- English language requirements also apply.
Program Description
The Bachelor of Education is a four-year, full-time, honours degree (Level 8) designed to qualify students to teach in primary schools. Accredited by the Teaching Council, it seeks to equip participants with the competence to teach at all levels of the primary school. Reflecting the College's well-established reputation for excellence in teacher education, this programme enables students to examine their role as a learner, a teacher, a researcher and a leader. It comprises the on-campus study and school placement and also gives students the opportunity to specialise in specific areas in education or the liberal arts. Insightful and challenging, the BEd programme will prepare you for a varied and rewarding career as an educator.
Career Opportunities
The Bachelor of Education Honours Degree is designed to qualify students to teach in primary school. This University of Limerick accredited degree is an internationally recognised qualification and was the first programme of its kind to be accredited by the Teaching Council of Ireland. The course promotes the personal and intellectual development of students while providing the professional and academic foundation for a career in teaching.

Research PhD in German Studies at MIC
Graduate, Sandra Wagner, talks about her experience of studying for her PhD in German Studies. The Department of German Studies at MIC provides a supportive and encouraging environment for postgraduate students as part of a structured supervision programme run by the Department. Graduate Certificate in Middle Leadership & Mentoring in Primary & Post- Primary Settings
The innovative Graduate Certificate in Middle Leadership and Mentoring in Primary and Post-Primary Settings is a one-year, part-time blended programme providing an academic qualification for teachers in professional studies and will be offered by and located at MIC’s Thurles campus. Year 2 offers opportunities to progress to a Diploma qualification and subsequently to that of Master's level. Endorsed by the Centre for School Leadership and designed to suit teachers’ professional lives, the programme will act as both a challenge and a support to those interested in middle leadership in our schools.

The innovative Graduate Certificate in Middle Leadership and Mentoring in Primary and Post-Primary Settings is a one-year, part-time blended programme providing an academic qualification for teachers in professional studies and will be offered by and located at MIC’s Thurles campus. This Level 9 postgraduate qualification is set in the context of awakening and acknowledging the role of middle leaders in our schools—a recognition that focuses on a range of skills including the less often studied inter-related concepts of instructional leadership, understanding how teachers learn and how change wisdom is central to the success of all our efforts.
