Admission Criteria

 The applicant must provide all the documents mentioned in the Regulation, as well as a motivation letter referring to the selected course or study cycle. To complete the application process it is necessary to submit the following scanned documents as PDF files:

  • Recent photo;
  • Up-to-date CV;
  • Identification document/passport;
  • An official academic transcript that you have completed secondary education or equivalent in the country of origin, with final average and proof of access to higher education exams;
  • Official academic transcript records of bachelor degree and Diploma with final average;
  • Document certifying the applicant’s Portuguese language level: B1 level in Portuguese Language and complete the B2 level until the end of the first year of the degree (only applicable to 1st cycle candidates);
  • Statement Under Oath191.4KB, that the applicant does not have Portuguese nationality nor any other country nationality that is member of the EU and fulfils the requirements needed for the Access and Admission category for International Students;
  • Bank transfer slip of the payment for the application fee.
Program Description

A Biological Engineer uses his training in Biology, Mathematics, Physics, Chemistry and Engineering to find solutions to technical and scientific problems in the areas of interface between Biology and Engineering.

History

The Integrated Master in Biological Engineering (MIEB) was created in 2007/2008 as a result of the adaptation to the Bologna Process of the Degree in Biological Engineering, in operation at IST since 1997/1998. The number of graduates in Biological Engineering in the last 12 years has already exceeded 550. The training offered by IST is recognized by the Order of Engineers ( OE ) and was recently (Feb. 2016) accredited by the Higher Education Assessment and Accreditation Agency (A3ES ) for a period of 6 years.

Objectives

The objective of MIEB is to train Engineers to occupy leadership positions in Biological Engineering, Biotechnology, Biomedicine and related areas. High-quality and up-to-date academic training facilitate students' mobility towards Schools of excellence in Europe and that of future Masters in the global labour market. The main characteristics of the MIEB are:

  • a solid and up-to-date academic training in Mathematics, Physics, Chemistry and Engineering Sciences,
  • multidisciplinary and up-to-date training in various fields including Environment and Energy, Medical Bioengineering, Food Engineering, Industrial Management, Nanobiotechnology, Bioinformatics, Systems Biology and Cell and Tissue Engineering,
  • transversal training that encourages and promotes the development of skills such as autonomy, analytical and critical spirit, flexibility and creativity, adaptability, time management and teamwork,
  • training accredited by the Order of Engineers and leading to the award of the professional title of Engineer.

The MIEB is aimed at students with a solid background in Biology, Mathematics and Physics who want to develop a professional career within the Agro-food, Pharmaceutical, Biomedical and Life Sciences industries, who intend to work in Research and Development at the Academy or at Industry or who wish to start entrepreneurial projects in these areas.
