Program Description

MEFT is a 5-year degree that combines state-of-the-art Physics, Engineering and Technology in a unique and coherent formation. This unity in diversity allows us to design different programs for different students, with trajectories more oriented towards Science, Society or Companies.

The formation in Technological Physical Engineering realizes the view that economic, human and social progress can be achieved by understanding and manipulating matter. Not only on a macroscopic and human scale, as in the scientific and industrial revolutions of the 17th, 18th and 19th centuries, but also, in the 21st century, at scales ranging from nanotechnology to the distant and unknown parts of the Universe.

The main objective of MEFT is to prepare scientists and engineers highly qualified in Physics, capable of following scientific and technological development and innovation. Playing an active role in a constantly changing world, MEFT graduates are prepared to identify scientific development at the frontiers of knowledge and contribute to the development of future technologies.

The Master in Technological Physics Engineering is designed to generate innovators, "out of the box" thinkers, capable of facing challenges at the frontiers of knowledge, determining crucial investments for society, in domains where Physics and Engineering meet. The Masters in Technological Physics Engineering work in areas such as energy, environment, health, biomedicine, financial services, research, organization and visualization of information, communications and computing.

Professional Opportunities

The ease of placement in the job market is one of the factors favoured by candidates for higher education, namely when considering the option of entering the Master in Technological Physics Engineering.

The vast majority of MEFT students do internships in research units or in companies, thus gaining an experience that is often decisive for their professional future. This information demonstrates the broad spectrum of competencies of MEFT graduates.

Given the broad spectrum of training in Physics and Engineering, it is possible to find among the Masters in Technological Physics Engineering professionals with different profiles, including managers of multinationals, entrepreneurs who manage their own companies, doctoral researchers in scientific research institutions and qualified engineers in companies Technology development. The main employers of MEFT include companies in the areas of microtechnologies, nanoelectronics, space technology, energy, bioengineering, software development; higher education and/or scientific research institutions; consultants and banks; governmental institutes.

The Employability Observatory of the Instituto Superior Técnico (OEIST)  prepared a Report on the employability of students who graduated in the Master of Physical and Technological Engineering at IST which was made public.
