Program Description

Access to information and the protection of communications in a global and heavily technology-based world are recognized as determining factors for economic and social progress, and the sovereignty of States. Portugal, as a member of NATO and the European Union, recently constituted, as a result of international standards, a National Cybersecurity Center in fulfilment of the national strategy for Cyberspace. The development of this project and its corresponding achievements, namely with regard to the organization of critical infrastructures, requires a set of qualified professionals, both technically and academically and scientifically.

The master course in Information Security and Law in Cyberspace is a joint initiative of the Instituto Superior Técnico and the Faculty of Law, University of Lisbon, and the Naval School, which aims to provide specialized scientific training in this multidisciplinary area supported by the complementarity of strengths of the three institutions, reinforcing the articulation between theory, practice and research in these fields, and thus contributing to providing the country with the necessary skills to face the challenges that arise.

The tripartite scientific coordination of the course is in charge of

  • Prof. Dr. Carlos Caleiro, Instituto Superior Técnico, U. Lisboa
  • Prof. Dr. Eduardo Vera-Cruz Pinto, Faculty of Law, U. Lisbon
  • Prof. Dr. Anacleto Cortez Correia, Escola Naval

The course capitalizes on the teaching experience and scientific competence of its faculty. The academic year 2013/14 marks the offer of the first edition of the postgraduate course in Information Security and Law in Cyberspace, the precursor of this master's course.

It is intended to provide a common horizontal formation with a wide spectrum, compatible with previous training in several areas, but allowing an optional specific deepening in the predominant areas of Law, Security and Information Management, Mathematics and Computer Engineering. The tripartite contribution of the proposing institutions is thus decisive not only for their areas of expertise but also for the articulation between areas, providing a comprehensive view of the problems associated with information security and its applications.

Holders of a bachelor's degree or legal equivalent, obtained before the Bologna Process, or a master's degree, obtained after the Bologna Process, in the areas of Law, Engineering, Mathematics, Social or Economic Sciences, Military Sciences can apply. or Police officers; holders of an equivalent foreign higher education degree; holders of other academic degrees, with professional experience of at least 2 years, and who hold a school and scientific curriculum that demonstrates the ability to carry out this cycle of studies.

Professional Opportunities

It is intended that the course is seen, even as a way to profit from the specificity of the training, as a step of complementary training for professionals with a special interest in the area, integrated into state organizations, regulatory entities or companies, and not as an alternative to the courses existing.
