Program Description

The Master in Mathematics and Applications (MMA) aims to prepare qualified staff for sectors of industry and services with a strong scientific and technological impact, conveyed through solid preparation in several fields of pure and applied mathematics. The training provided also enhances the continuation of 3rd cycle studies, either in mathematics or in other areas of science and engineering where solid training in mathematics is essential, namely in view of the training of researchers and higher education teachers.

MMA is structured in four specialization profiles: Mathematics, Applied and Industrial Mathematics, Computer Mathematics, and Probabilities and Statistics. The Curriculum Plan page gives information about the requirements to be taken into account to complete each of these profiles. In the Curriculum it is possible to consult the list of curricular units offered in MMA, grouped by scientific areas. Each profile provides for the realization of a number of optional curricular units, which can be taken at IST or at a Faculty / Institute of the University of Lisbon, as long as they allow the design of a coherent study plan in Mathematics and Applications. Two ECMI profiles, in Technomathematics and Economathematics, are also available through specific study plans in Applied and Industrial Mathematics and Probabilities and Statistics, respectively. The description of the ECMI programs, the requirements for obtaining the ECMI Certificate and the list of universities that are part of the ECMI consortium can be consulted on the ECMI Programs in Industrial Mathematics page.

History

The MMA resulted from the application, in 2006, of the Bologna Process to mathematics courses existing at IST since 1983. It is the responsibility of the Department of Mathematics (DM), created at IST in 1980 and which today has more than one hundred teachers and researchers doctorates. The course was designed to take advantage of the very rich framework in applications to engineering and technology provided by IST, currently offering training according to four specialization profiles: Mathematics, Applied and Industrial Mathematics, Computer Mathematics, and Probabilities and Statistics. In 2015, DM was accredited as an Educational Center by the European Consortium for Mathematics in Industry (ECMI), offering, since then, training in Industrial Mathematics in accordance with the ECMI model.

Objectives

  • Advanced training in several fields of pure and applied mathematics, including algebra, functional analysis, numerical analysis, cryptography, statistics, data mining, differential equations and dynamic systems, mathematical physics, geometry, logic and computing, financial mathematics, industrial mathematics, modelling mathematics, optimization, stochastic processes and topology.
  • Initiation to research in one of these domains or initiation to solving problems of a mathematical nature in a business or multidisciplinary environment.

Recipients

Graduates in mathematics, science or engineering who wish to acquire advanced training with a view to pursuing a scientific or technical career, academic or professional, in mathematics or its applications.

Professional Opportunities

The prospects for employability for IST mathematics graduates are excellent. Over the last few decades, they were immediately absorbed by the national and international labour market, with the majority having built successful professional careers in companies from different branches of activity, of which banking and insurance, telecommunications, information technology, market research, consulting stand out. and industry. Some students have pursued doctoral studies with great success, having embarked on an academic and scientific research career. In some specific cases, IST graduates in mathematics have formed their own consultancy companies.

Some of the companies that sought out recent graduates of Técnico's Mathematics Masters to eventually recruit during the last year were AT Kearney, Adelard, Banco CTT, BNP Paribas, Deloitte, Édouard Leclerc, EDP, Galp, JP Morgan, Kantar Worldpanel, LCG, Management Solutions, Marionette, Nielsen, Siscog, Siva, Sonae, Toyota, Willis Towers Watson.
