The training of human resources with higher education in the area of Computer Engineering in Portugal is of particular importance when it is known the effort that all economic areas and the Public Administration must make to improve their productivity and competitiveness. In most cases, this improvement in productivity implies profound restructuring supported by intense use of computer resources.

Since IST is one of the best Engineering Schools in the country, it is natural that it should reside in the capacity to produce a significant number of professionals with advanced training in this area. This advanced training takes place, naturally, through training in terms of the second cycle, along the lines of Bologna, and of further courses, leading to doctoral degrees and other postgraduate courses. Thus, it is strategic for the country that a school with IST's human and material resources invest in the training of Computer Engineers.

The IST Master's in Informatics and Computer Engineering (operating on the Alameda campus and Taguspark), fully filled with quality candidates since its creation, will accept applications from students who will enter the first cycle in Computer Engineering, but also students with the first cycle obtained in other institutions of higher education, which will complement their training at IST. Thus, this course represents a key element for training in the area of Eng. Informática in the country, in general, and in the region of Lisbon and the Tagus Valley, in particular.

The Master in Informatics and Computers Engineering is based on the strong basic training given by the first cycle (Degree in Engineering Sciences - Informatics and Computer Engineering - LEIC), offering attractive specializations for students and the market and also serving as a base for students wishing to enter a PhD Program, and creates a solid basis for the intervention of the IST Department of Computer Engineering in lifelong training, which will represent an increasingly important component of the advanced education market.

The specialists trained in the course acquire skills that make them especially prepared to deal with the complex and challenging information systems that exist today at the level of large companies and Public Administration, with scientific rigour and technologically up-to-date. This, both at the level of value chains and networks of companies, and at the level of the Information Society in general, where emerging activities in the scope of the Knowledge Society stand out, such as companies linked to innovation and start-ups. The primary scope of this engineering covers systems where products, technologies, solutions and computer services are essential components for operation and decision. These include, from Organizational Systems such as Companies, Business Networks and Public Administration, to Social Systems,

Professional Opportunities

In the current Portuguese and European development landscape, there is a need for specialists capable of designing, adapting or managing complex computer systems, systems and networks. In fact, from the important services sector - where banking, insurance, tourism, culture, multimedia stand out - to the industrial sector, including the Central, Local and Regional Public Administration, the lack of human resources is evident to act in a professional, qualified and up-to-date manner in the field of Information Technologies, involving all the areas mentioned.

Typical employers for engineers who have taken the Master's course in Computer and Computer Engineering at IST are the following: banking and insurance service companies, computer service providers, telecommunications companies, software development companies.

At the end of the Master in Informatics and Computer Engineering students will be able to enter the job market. Taking into account the specializations indicated above, students have a wide range of specific professional skills, of which the following stand out:
    • Analysis and design of complex systems.
    • Systems project management techniques
    • Modeling and use of data in computer systems.
    • Development of applications in distributed systems
    • Management, configuration and operation of computer systems.
    • Advanced problem-solving techniques.
    • Design of adaptable systems to solve complex problems.
    • Design of systems that interact with human beings using natural interfaces.
    • Control and robotics.
    • Modeling and control of industrial systems.
    • Generic optimization techniques.
