The Iscte - University Institute of Lisbon was founded in 1972 as one of Portugal’s first modern universities, with the central aim of studying labour and social dynamics in a rapidly changing world. Since its establishment, the university has expanded its disciplinary reach into four schools: Iscte Business School, the School of Sociology and Public Policy, the School of Technology and Architecture and the School of Social Sciences and Humanities.

On campus, students find not only a robust intellectual tradition, with mentorship from teaching staff involved in cutting-edge research, but also a vibrant, multicultural environment. Of the approximately 10 000 students enrolled in undergraduate and postgraduate programs, nearly 20% are international, coming from 80 different countries.

Furthermore, the university is actively engaged in collaborative projects, networks and partnerships around the world, including a range of educational, training and research programs supported by the European Union. Through its commitment to internationalization, innovative research and education aligned with professional standards, Iscte prepares its students for competitive careers and thoughtful lives in the 21st century.

Mission and Vision

The mission of Iscte is to create and convey scientific knowledge according to the best international standards, training highly skilled professionals, mainly at the postgraduate level, in the areas of management, information technology and architecture, social sciences and public policy, for the advancement of society.

This mission is achieved by improving the research-teaching nexus with a strong applied focus, by fostering multidisciplinary learning, and by maximizing the interplay between entrepreneurship, technology and innovation to prepare competent professionals able to deal effectively with the forthcoming challenges of society, within the profit and non-profit organizations.

The three main vectors of this mission - research, teaching and learning, and service provided to community - embody the vision of Iscte as a research university focused on continuous improvement dynamics of the institution in the various fields of its management and activity, such as:

A board of highly skilled faculty and researchers representing the best international standards;
The internationalization of research, teaching and knowledge transfer, and the academic mobility of faculty members and students, which fulfils the integration of Iscte in international research and education networks;
The transfer and exchange of the produced scientific and technological knowledge, particularly through the development of products, provision of services to society, lifelong education and promotion of entrepreneurship and employability;
The implementation and promotion of activities that grant access and fruition of cultural and scientific goods to individual users and groups inside and outside Iscte;
The continuous interaction with society, contributing to the analysis and resolution of problems at national and local levels, as well as the establishment of partnerships with organizations committed to the cultural, social and economic development of the country;
The professionalization of infrastructure management and qualification by means of creating a culture of excellence that provides effective support to research, teaching and knowledge transfer activities in order to ensure institutional sustainability.

Candidate profile

  • does not hold Portuguese nationality;
  • is not a national of an EU Member State*;
  • is not a relative of a Portuguese or EU national;
  • has not resided legally in Portugal for more than two years, continuously, on August 31st of the year in which they intend to enter Iscte**;
  • has not applied for admission to higher education through the special regimes;
  • does not benefit from a status of equality of rights and duties granted under an international treaty signed between the Portuguese State and the one of which they are nationals.

Admission Conditions

To enter an Undergraduate Degree (Licenciatura) or an Integrated Master's Degree (Mestrado Integrado) programme through the Special Competition for Access and Admission for International Students, international candidates must demonstrate, cumulatively:

  • Academic qualification in the areas of knowledge required for the cycle of studies to which they are applying;
  • An independent command of the language of instruction of the study cycle to which they are applying - minimum level B1, according to the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages (CEFR), not applicable to candidates from Portuguese / English speaking countries as well as Spanish / Spanish speaking candidates.

Student Life

Sports facilities

The Students' Union of ISCTE-IUL has sports activities for exchange students and you may take part in University sports competitions together with home students. They also offer at the Energy Box: krav maga, dance, pilates, salsa and kizomba, yoga, etc. Apart from the above options, the students have the possibility to book the multipurpose campus situated next to the INDEG-IUL building.

Student clubs

The ISCTE-IUL Students Union (AEISCTE) is an autonomous organization held by the students of ISCTE-IUL. Its mission is to socially and culturally complement the student's academic life while they are with the ISCTE-IUL. You will be able to find information about events held not only in Lisbon but also in other cities in Portugal. There, you can also find leaflets about concerts, performing arts and movie festivals that take place in Lisbon, and much more.

Housing services

With the University Residence Professor José Pinto Peixoto, ISCTE-IUL meets some of the accommodation needs of its visiting students and teachers which, so far have only been served through the room and private house market across Lisbon.

Located in the Monastery of Santos-o-Novo – which is classified as National Monument – on a small hill by the river Tagus, in Lisbon’s east end, the residence benefits from a privileged view and is a short distance from the central railway station of Santa Apolónia, the typical neighbourhood of Alfama, downtown Lisbon, Terreiro do Paço, and also close to the new residential, commercial and service area of the Parque das Nações.

Library services

The Library of ISCTE-IUL, specialized in the area of ​​social and human sciences, business and technology, aims to support all sectors of activity of the Institute, providing, under the best conditions of use, bibliographic resources necessary for the performance of teaching, research, continuing education and cultural extension.

    ICT services

    Wired network service in offices, rooms and public spaces (auditoriums, laboratories, classrooms and study rooms).

    It is possible to access ISCTE-IUL resources from the home via VPN, establishing a secure tunnel connection between the personal computer and the ISCTE-IUL network.

    These services include access to the content of many scientific publications.

    Medical services

    Students can benefit from the agreement establish with the Social Services (SAS) at the Technical University of Lisbon (UTL) to use the Medical Center for general medical consultation, family planning, maternal health and ophthalmology. Also for nursing services and vaccinations. At the ISCTE-IUL Residence, Dr. Fernando Ramires provides medical care, under appointment.
